UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VA (VOLT-AMPS) AND WATTS

By

UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VA (VOLT-AMPS) AND WATTS

Power consumption information on computer loads is often not specified in a way that allows simple sizing of a UPS. Besides, if you know the exact power consumption of your PC, buying a correctly sized UPS can prove to be a daunting task. It is possible to configure systems that appear to be correctly sized but actually overload the UPS.

REASON: Many people are confused about the distinction between the Watt and Volt-Amp (VA) measures for UPS load sizing. According to Neil Rasmussen, the founder and the Chief Technical Officer of American Power Conversion, this confusion has been created by the many UPS manufacturers due to their failure of distinguishing between these measures. In this tech note I will try to explain the difference between Watt and VA and how the terms are correctly and incorrectly used in specifying power protection equipment.

Before proceeding with the explanation, first, we need to understand that Electricity is actually made up of three parts.

TRUE or REAL Power (WATT),
Apparent Power (VA),
Reactive Power (VAR).

Don’t worry about the explanation of these three parts at the moment as it will follow in the article. Ok, let’s start,

WATT is a unit of POWER and POWER is a product of VOLTAGE and CURRENT (P=VxI) or for making it easier for readers (P=VxA)
V or VOLT is used to represent VOLTAGE unit and AMPERE (I or A) is a unit for measuring CURRENT so theoretically (Volts) V x A (Amps)=WATTs, but it’s not always the case.

The terms VA (volt-amps) and watts are frequently used interchangeably when discussing the power consumption of an electronic device. VA is an expression of “APPARENT POWER” and WATT is an expression of “TRUE POWER” in AC circuit. In AC circuits, VA is referred to as APPARENT power or Power that appears to be flowing in the circuit.WATTs are referred to as TRUE power or an indication of the power that is truly being dissipated by the load. When the load is resistive, power dissipation in VA and watts will be the same.

For example, suppose we have a simple AC circuit. In this circuit, the power source is 220 volts, and the load is a simple light bulb with 440 ohms of resistance. The circuit current (A) can be calculated using Ohm’s Law by dividing the voltage (V) by the resistance (R).

A = V/R
A = 220/440
A = 0.5 amps

The power (P) consumed by the light bulb may be calculated using one of these formulas:

P = V xA
P = 220 x 0.5
P = 110 watts OR

P = A(square) x R
P = (0.5)square x 440
P = 110 watts

As the load is resistive, we can see from the above example that VA and Watts are absolutely same, that is 110.

Things don’t stay the same when the load becomes electronic. The constantly changing amplitude and polarity of AC power gives rise to reactive components in an electronic load. There are two types of reactance – inductive and capacitive – and they are opposite in nature. Together with resistance, they represent an opposition to AC current flow calledimpedance. VA and watts change because circuits with impedance exhibit a characteristic called power factor (pf). Power factor is the ratio of true power or watts to apparent power or volt amps. (Both are identical when the voltage and current are in-phase that seldom happens in AC circuit).

In addition to the power that reactive loads actually dissipate, a certain amount of power is absorbed by the reactive load and then once again released to the circuit. The power that is absorbed and then released again to the circuit is known as REACTIVE POWER, and it is the difference between apparent power and true power.

For example, consider the same AC circuit now with a computer as a load. The computer’s impedance is roughly known to be 60 ohms. So, if we simply apply Ohm’s Law, the current flowing in the circuit would be equal to:

A = V/R
A = 220/60
A = 3.66 amps

Again applying Ohm’s Law, the power consumed in the circuit would appear to be:

P = VxA
P = 220 x 3.66
P = 805 VA

Since the computer is a reactive load and not a resistive one, the power factor of the computer must be considered in order to determine the watts dissipated by the computer

P = V x A x pf
P = 220 x 3.66 x 0.60 (Computers with Power Factor Corrected supplies can have the power factor greater than 90% or equal to 1)
P = 484 watts

The difference between the 805 VA apparent power and the 484 watts of true power is the reactive power or

805 – 484 = 321 VAR or volt-amps-reactive.

Why Watt and VA rating may differ for a computer

Computers use an electronic switching power supply. There are two basic types of computer switching power supplies,

1) Power Factor Corrected supplies (PFC)
2) Non- PFC or Capacitor Input supplies.

It is not possible to tell which kind of power supply is used by just inspecting the equipment, and this information is not commonly provided in equipment specifications. Power Factor Corrected or PFC supplies have the characteristic that the Watt and VA ratings are equal (that is they have a power factor of 0.99 to 1.0).

Non-PFC or Capacitor Input supplies have the characteristic that the Watt rating is in the range of 0.55 to 0.75 times the VA rating (power factor of 0.55 to 0.75). Computer equipment made prior to 1996 also typically used this type of power supply and exhibited a power factor less than one.

UPS Power Rating

UPS have both maximum Watt ratings and maximum VA ratings, though not always mentioned together. Neither the Watt nor the VA rating of a UPS may be exceeded. It is a de-facto standard in the industry that the Watt rating is approximately 60% of the VA rating for small UPS systems, this being the typical power factor of common personal computer loads. In some cases, UPS manufacturers only publish the VA rating of the UPS. For small UPS designed for computer loads, which have only a VA rating, it is appropriate to assume that the Watt rating of the UPS is 60% of the published VA rating. For larger UPS systems, it is becoming common to focus on the Watt rating of the UPS, and to have equal Watt and VA ratings for the UPS, because the Watt and VA ratings of the typical loads are equal.

Example where a sizing problem can occur

Consider the case of a typical 1000VA UPS with no mentioning of power factor (pf). The user wants to power an 800VA computer with the UPS. If the computer has a Non-Power Factor Corrected power supply with 0.6 pf, then it will have a Watt rating of

800VA x 0.6 = 480 WATT

which is within the VA and WATT rating of the UPS, which is 60% of 1000VA or around 600W.

Now consider the same computer with a Power Factor Corrected power supply, it will then have a Watt rating of 800W and a VA rating of 800VA due to pf being 1. Although the VA rating of the load is 800VA, which is within the VA rating of the UPS, the UPS will not power this load because the 800W rating of the load exceeds the Watt rating of the UPS, which is 60% of 1000VA or around 600W.

CONCLUSION

Most UPS products are rated in VA and good brands always have a power factor rating that is prominently published as part of the product specification (Standard UPS usually have a power factor of 60% -65% and good brands may have a pf of more than 80%). In many cases, UPS power factors are designed to approximate computer power factors. A 1000 VA UPS with a power factor of 60% or 0.60 would deliver 600 watts, which means you are buying a 600VA UPS at a price of 1000VA. At low power levels, the differences between VA and watts are often slight. However, understanding the difference between VA and watts is very important to make sure the power protection device is compatible with the load.

If using equipment nameplate ratings for sizing, a user might configure a system, which appears to be correctly sized based on VA ratings but actually exceeds the UPS Watt rating. By sizing the VA rating of a load to be no greater than 60% of the VA rating of the UPS, it is impossible to exceed the Watt rating of the UPS. Therefore, unless you have high certainty of the Watt ratings of the loads, the safest approach is to keep the sum of the load nameplate ratings below 60% of the UPS VA rating. Note that this conservative sizing approach will typically give rise to an oversized UPS and a larger run time than expected.

Remote PC Controlling without Software Like Team Viewer , Radmin

By
Remote sharing is nowadays on its peak, people use remote sharing to provide live support or for sharing screens. Most of us always use third party software’s for sharing or controlling remote systems using software’s like Teamviewer or Radmin etc.  Today i am going to teach you guys how to connect any two or as many as windows PC through remote without using any third party tool like team viewer etc. So lets learn how to share screens without any third party tool.As we all knows Windows OS is  full of hidden programs that are only limited to developer or geeks. Today we are going to learn about MSRA (windows remote assistance) executable. MSRA is windows inbuilt remote assistance program using which you can control remote pc’s, share remote screens, provide remote support and much more. Lets learn how to use MSRA for remote sharing.

Steps to Share or Control Remote PC using MSRA:

1. First of all click on startup and type command “MSRA” and press enter as shown below:

2. Now you will see screen like below having title “Windows Remote Assistance” , there are two options displayed:
  • Invite someone you trust to help you : Choose this option if you want to share your screen with someone.
  • Help someone who invited you : Choose this option if you want to control someone others PC remotely.

Click on Option a “Invite someone you trust to help you” to share your screen:

Select shown option to continue

Once you click the above option then you will see below panel with multiple options:

Options displayed for Windows remote assistance

Now you can see three different options :
  • Send this invitation as file : On clicking this option you can save the invitation file and send it to anyone from which you require help. After saving the file another window will open containing the password. You have to provide that password to person whom you want to connect to your machine.
  • Use email to send an invitation: You can send invitation directly via email but it requires email client on your machine to send email like outlook etc.
  • Use Easy connect: Another method to directly connect two PC is using Easy connect but this require some basic settings at your routers end i.e. If the computer has IPv6 disabled or is behind a NAT router that blocks Teredo traffic, the Easy Connect option will be unavailable.

Now once you have send the  remote assistance invitation file to user, he can connect to your PC by double clicking the invitation file and then entering the password.

Note: You need to enable remote assistance service.

3. Help someone who invited you : By clicking this option you can provide help to anyone who has done the above task. You will need two things : Invitation file and password to connect remote PC.

Woohooo… Did you know there is another smart option by which you can directly connect to any PC using IP address? If not, well lets learn that too. Yup we can also provide windows remote assistance support using IP address too. Here are options.

1. First of all click on startup and type command “MSRA” and press enter.
2. Now you will see screen where two options are displayed, Select “Help someone who invited you”.
3. After that you will see some option, click on the bottom one “Advanced connection option for help desk” as shown below :
Select advanced connection option for help desk
After clicking option you see below panel to enter IP address:
Enter IP address or computer name
After entering IP address press Next to connect to IP address. That’s all.
Hope you all enjoyed the learning. If you have any queries ask me in form of comments.

How to Download YouTube videos using VLC

This tutorial gives 1 of the method on how to download YouTube videos using VLC player...

YouTube does not let you directly access the video data which they are stored. They move a copy of video into their cache ( not the cache memory :D .. I mean a separate server which acts like cache memory ) and share the data with you...

So its NOT possible to download the video directly from YouTube. If we get the "cache link" from YouTube,
There are few add on's for sum browser to get this download  link...But here we are going to see to download using VLC. i.e to get the download link using VLC..

There are many YouTube downloaders are there in internet. But all are not good, and you cant download the videos in original quality. But the best idea to download youtube videos with original quality you can use VLC player as youtube downloader. Here is the way to do -->

1. Go to the specific video page and copy the desired URL which you are planing to download.
2. Open VLC Player, and goto Media>> Open Network Stream.

3. Now you will get following window, just paste the URL in that window.

4. Now you will get video thumbnail in video player. Now click play on play button. The video will stream now.

Problem -
Video not streaming?
-> Click here to get the latest version of VLC !..

5.Now click goto "Tools>>Codec Information". You get a new window and you will see some information about the video. At the end you will "Location". Click on that link and press "Ctrl+A" OR right click and select all. This is only to ensure you have copied the whole link.

Select all the and copy the link

Paste it in to any Web browser  that will directly play the song . Finally You right click and save it directly

Worlds Smallest Petrol Engine

By

Scientists have created the smallest petrol engine in the world ( less than a centimeter long not even half an inch ), small enough to power a watch or any small gadget. The mini-motor, which runs for two years on a single squirt of lighter fuel, is set to revolutionize world technology. It generates 700 times more energy than a conventional battery. It could be used to operate laptops and mobile phones for months doing away with the need for charging. Experts believe it could be phasing out batteries in such items within just six years. The engine, minute enough to be balanced on a fingertip, has been produced by engineers at the University of Birmingham.At present, charging an ordinary battery to deliver one unit of energy involves putting 2,000 units into it. The little engine, because energy is produced locally, is far more effective. One of the main problems faced by engineers who have tried to produce micro motors in the past has been the levels of heat produced. The engines got so hot they burned themselves out and could not be re-used. The Birmingham team overcame this by using heat-resistant materials such as ceramic and silicon carbide.
Professor Graham Davies, head of the university’s engineering school, said: We’ve brought together all the engineering disciplines, materials, chemical engineering, civil engineering, and mechanical engineering. What better place to have the second industrial revolution in nano-technology than where the first took place, in the heart of the West Midlands.Dr Kyle Jiang, from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, said:We are looking at an industrial revolution happening in peoples pockets. The breakthrough is an enormous step forward. Devices which need re- charging or new batteries are a problem but in six years will be a thing of the past.

How to Connect Laptop to a Television Screen

By

How to Connect Laptop to TV – Step by Step

Step 1: Most computers have an S-Video port that can be connected to the S-Video input of your TV screen using a very cheap S-Video cable (this cable is round with 4 or 7 pins). If you have an older monitor, you can use the 15-pin VGA cable to connect the computer to the TV and it will offer better picture quality than the S-Video cable.

                 VGA Cable                                                                                   S-Video Cable

 The newer HDTVs and laptop computers have DVI ports so a DVI Male to Male Cable or DVI to HDMI Adapter Cable can be used to hook the computer display and the TV. The DVI to HDMI cable can be used when your HDTV doesn’t have an DVI port but does have an HDMI port.

Connect the Audio RCA Cable for Sound

Step 2: Now that you have connected the computer to the TV using a physical cable, you need another cable to transmit the sound as all the above cables only transmit the video but not the audio part.

You need a 3.5mm Mini Plug to RCA Cable Stereo to connect the audio line out from a notebook to your TV. The red cable connector goes into the red socket of your TV, black connector into the black socket while the black connector goes into the 3.5mm headphone jack of your computer.

  Mini to RCA Audio Cable

                                                                                                        DVI Cable

Step 3: Open the “display settings” on your Windows computer and activate the output to the TV screen. You can either mirror content of your computer on the TV or extend the display just like a dual monitor screen.
If you are using Windows 7, press the keyboard shortcut Windows + P to quickly access the display settings or search for “Connect to External Display” in the Windows Run box.
Step 4: Pick up your TV remote and switch to “External Inputs” from the menu. You will need to change the default “Video 1″ to a different selection which may be “HDMI 1″ or “Video 2″ depending on how you have made the connection.
Important: Make sure that you connect the physical cable to the TV before turning on the computer as sometimes it may fail to recognize external display. You may also need to change the screen resolution of your TV using the Display settings in your Control Panel else the picture may sometimes appear distorted.
